Rabbit bedding Questions and AnswersRabbit bedding?Q) Just bought a gorgeous rabbit and have put sawdust and newspaper in her hutch-Is there anything else i should put in there to keep her warm? Also, will she need to have any jabs done? she is 9 weeks old. thanks
A) Hay or shavings wouldn't be a bad idea either.Rabbit Bedding?Q) Does anybody know of any alternative bedding to sawdust? It is so messy, i have gravel in my garden and it is impossible to keep clean! Only sensible answers please!!
A) i use newspapers then straw on top,you need something absorbent to soak up the urine.
i dont think there is anything you can buy that does not make a mess, straw shavings and hay make a mess, and a rabbit needs these to keep warm in the winter, and something soft to lie onDoes my house rabbit need bedding in the winter?Q) My two house rabbits live in my spare room. They have a really big pen with a hutch in it that they can hop in and out of (I've taken the front off but the "bedroom" bit is still enclosed). While I'm at home to supervise, they have the run of the house.
Just wondered if I should put bedding in now it's getting colder. They never use the bedroom bit of the hutch, they always sleep on the floor and when I'm at home I have the heating on but leave the radiator off in their room (they seem to prefer it in there because it's cooler). So do I need to give them bedding or will they be ok in an unheated (draught free) room?
A) yes you should. I used to put bedding in my rabbits hutch all yaer round and she was inside. They like to barrow them selfs into it, just like they do in the wild. Also they love to eat the hay/straw. Put plenty in and them will make a bed for themselves and lay there rather than the floor. What other bedding is there for a long haired rabbit?Q) i have a pet rabbit and he has sawdust as bedding and it is constantily stuck in his fur, is there any other products i can use that would not get so suck in his long fur, i'm now using wood base cat litter and he dont seam to like this. please help asap.
A) Are you keeping him in a hutch? If so perhaps you could bring him indoors and make him a house rabbit. House rabbits do not need to be caged, so you do not need to use sawdust for bedding. Mine live on my kitchen floor and have a cat litterbox in which i use a paper based cat litter from morrisons supermarket (it it excellent for absorbing wee and is safer then regular cat litter) and they have a rug to sleep on and keep their feet warm.
If he is outside in a hutch, just try giving him a lot more hay or straw to use a bedding as anything small like sawdust will get into his fur and cause mats and tangles. Just make sure to groom him every day and clip his fur in the summer so he doesn't get too hot. If you have any old rugs or carpets, you could cut one of these up to fit inside his hutch as a something soft and warm for his feet. But you will need to wash it regularly as he will wee and poo on it unless he has a litterbox in his hutch or run that he uses for the toilet. Other possible alternatives are shredded paper or newspaper, but my rabbit used to eat these when I used them in her hutch (before she became a house rabbit).
Good Luck! Why does my rabbit eat the bedding?Q) I've used shop bought stuff & shredded my own for her, she still eats it no matter what kind...why?
A) Have you tried Carefresh bedding?
Also -- rabbits are prone to respiratory infections so if at all possible, try an all wire cage. Even solid bottom cages that are cleaned regularly are not nearly as sanitary. Just make sure you have a plastic mat for it to rest it's feet on. They should have well padded feet naturally, but it helps. If a rabbits bedding in its hutch gets wet cause of the rain do you have to clean it out every time it rain?Q) We found a baby rabbit hopping around our street last week so we've adopted him bought him a huge hutch and a very large run. But I'm not really sure what rabbits like and dont like? Do they mind sitting on wet bedding, do you just leave it to dry? Do they get cold at night? I feel sorry for it being left on its own outside lol
Thanks
Thanks! I've booked a app at the vets for 10am tomorrow to get the jabs ... I am also going to buy a hutch cover .. Thanks everyone
A) heyyaa aww dat is reli nice of u that u r looking after it and its gud ure finding out how to look after it properly so cahnge it if it gets wet becue even thou it has fur it cn still get cold snd its like u sleeping on a wet bed lol so ask me if u need to no anything elserabbit beds?Q) i have been searching on the internet for rabbit beds, and they all sa suitable for rabbits, cats and dogs... does this mean i can buy a dog bed for my rabbit and it will be fine ?
i was just wondering, because i have a rabbit who likes to rest on pillows, so i wanted to buy her one.
A) there are many sites over the internet, such as ebay and bunnybasics aswell as others that have been mentioned, If you can only get a dog bed, as long as its small and fits inside the cage it should be perfectly fine.Any ideas of better ways to make a House Rabbits bedding?Q) I have a rabbit who is 4 months old and she is fantastic, the only problems I have is she makes such a mess with the wood chippings jumping in and out of her cage. As she is in the house I have this all over the place and it is driving me mad. I wondered if anyone had any ideas? I thought about trying her with a blanket in the bottom of her cage, what does everyone else do?
A) any old documents or paper that goes through a shredder will do. plus it helps stop i/d fraud.can i use shredded paper for my pet rabbits bedding instead ov staw?A) Yeah, although I personally prefer straw bedding over shredded paper. However with shredded paper you don't have to worry as much about mites.
If you use shredded newspaper, you may want to check that the newspaper uses soy based ink. Soy based ink is not harmful to your rabbit. Most newspapers now use soybased ink. It will sometimes say if it does at the top or bottom of the paper. If not, you can call your newspaper to find out.My children have a pet rabbit would it be unethical to eat it?Q) My childrens pet rabbit is on its last legs, we are a bit short of cash and it would make a good christmas roast as it is quite large.
I have spent a lot feeding, caging and bedding this rabbit over the years so I think it owes me something back.
Of course I would tell the children it was chicken.
A) Oh yeah, it's completely ethical to lie to your children and make them eat something that they have grown to love and adore. You stupid@ss! You really shouldn't be allowed to have children, they'd be better off with Micheal Jackson. Don't make me get the ASPCA on your dumbass.
Rabbit bedding?Q) Sorry to, yet again, blood with an obvious and stupid rabbit question but I'm seriously mixed up about this. I know several people, and have read several things, regarding rabbit bedding. Some people say you can use any of the following for your main rabbit bedding:
*Towels*Pieces of fleece*rabbit cage liners*grass mats*newspaper*
while other people say hamster bedding it fine, same deal as with any hamster; change it once a week. While some of those rich ones say change 1-2 times per week with that expensive rabbits-only bedding that you get at the "99 thousand dollar store". That was a joke! :)
O.K., I think I've gotten my question answered very well. Thanks! Just one more thing I'm adding. What about those rabbit cage liners? Are they safe or... At all good?
A) Okay. First off, Rabbits do not NEED bedding. It really depends ont he cage and the wants of the owner. NEVER used shavings. They are chewed by bunny and can kill bunny. If you are just lining a cage, use newspaper. There are locak papers for free ont eh stands in every supermarket. Pick up a pile, line the bottom. If you are using as litter in a box, I recommend recycled pellets such as yesterdays news or even feline pine. Pellets absorb great and break down so you know when to change. You want something that will help with odor since rabbit urine is incredibly strong with ammonia. The rabbit is more cofortable on a cold plastic base than on a pile of bedding. they like to flop down and cool off. that bedding will get in eyes and ears and cause infections as well as be irritating to the bun. I only recommend bedding IF you are litter training or have one litter trained. You can also use Equinpine from a local feed store. its used in horse stables. Its a pellet form as well. you can get a 40lb bag for about 10 bucks. I do use shredded newspaper at times too. They love to chew on paper and dig at it so just be aware if you layout nice flat sheets, it wont stay that way.:) Best of luckRabbit bedding?Q) What sort of a rabbit bedding is the best to put into their cage?
A) Hay or straw. Pine and cedar shavings are not recommended as bedding. Not only do they exude potentially harmful aromatic compounds that can cause respiratory irritation and interfere with proper liver function, but they also are not absorbent. Basically, shavings make really lousy litter.
Fresh hay is important for these reasons:
1)Provides necessary long fiber that your rabbit needs for healthy digestion.
2)Wears down teeth. Rabbits front teeth grow on average one-half inch each month. Most pellet feeds don't do enough and your otherwise gentle pet may begin chewing on it's cage and anything else it can find.
3)Many pellet feeds are nutrient rich. If not balanced with hay, these feeds may cause your rabbit to be overweight and lethargic. Dark, soft stool or dark colored and very strong smelling urine can be a sign that your rabbit needs more hay.
4)Reduces waste odor and helps to keep the cage cleaner.Rabbit Bedding?Q) Can you use normal stredded paper as well as wood chipping's & straw for bedding? When I say normal paper I mean plain paper inkless.
A) Sure. Maybe bedding would be more comfortable, but still. Just make sure that if you use paper pieces, don't make it sharp! :^)Is shredded paper safe as rabbit bedding?Q) Can I use the paper in my paper shredder as bedding for my rabbit in place of regular rabbit bedding that is bought in stores? If not, what is the cleanest and easiest bedding for an indoor rabbit cage?
A) I would suggest against it. When i got my rabbit the pet shop also had shredded newspaper in the cage so i used the same after i took her home but i noticed that she liked to eat the paper. i don't think the ink is good to be eaten. they best thin to use is hay for rabbits that can be bought at the pet shop. I used to buy if for $6 a bag which lasted for about a month so that is pretty cheap. It is also safe for them to eat.Is alfalfa ok to use for rabbit bedding?Q) I baught alfalfa bedding for my rabbit and i want to know if its ok to use
A) Alfalfa is a little rich. Timothy hay or orchard grass would be a better choice. Rabbits need hay available all the time to avoid getting hairball obstructions. Carefresh is good to use for bedding. Pine is okay. Cedar is NEVER a good idea because the oils that make it smell good are quite irritating/harmful to rabbits sensitive skin and respiratory tract.
So yes it is okay to use, but I wouldn't use straight alfalfa all the time.Best for Rabbit Bedding?Q) What is the best type of bedding to use for a pet rabbits cage? Some people say Yesterdays news, others say aspine shavings, and others say wood pellets? Any suggestions?
A) pine I have found is the best because rabbits have very sensitive feet they need a soft bedding, pine is softest of, as far as, commercially available, it is pretty cheap and it isn't very dusty so you won't have to worry about a weezing bunnycan i use cat litter (Feline Pine) as a rabbit BEDDING?Q) i know that i can use it as litter, but can i use it as the bedding in general?
A) well, if it a clumping litter that will stick to things, it may not be good. if it really has all natural and safe ingredients as advertised it should be very good unless it is a clumping litter. rabbits will eat any bedding that gets stuck to their fur when they groom themselves. be careful.Bedding for rabbit cages?Q) What sort of bedding should I put in my rabbits cage?
A) When I had my rabbit I used cedar shavings...they're cheap and come in a HUGE bag so they last a long time. Plus the cedar smell covers the smell of their droppings.Best bedding/liner for rabbit hutch?Q) I have an indoor rabbit that I keep in a nice wooden hutch. The hutch has a partition for a bedding area that's completely enclosed and then it has a partition for the food/toys, etc., that is open with caged sides where the rabbit can play, etc. Underneath there is a tray that runs the length of the hutch to catch all the droppings, urine, and food she might throw about. The rabbit can't get to the tray because it's under the caged floor (it slides up under the floor). I put soft bedding in her bed partition for her to sleep on and she likes that.
BUT what I need advice on is a litter/liner/bedding for the tray. I've been using cat litter to line the tray but the tray is so big (42 inches long) that it's difficult to maneuver when changing it without dumping the cat litter in the floor. I thought of just using newspaper, but then the urine might leak thru to the bottom of the tray and then THAT would have to be cleaned quite often.
I straighten out her cage daily and clean it out altogether once a week. Any advice on what to use that would make my life easier when cleaning out the tray would be greatly appreciated!! THANKS!
I realize that rabbits aren't rodents, but as you noticed, there is no other place to put rabbit questions. I also put the same question in the "other - pets" section. Thanks for the rabbit link!
A) There is a product called "Yesterdays News" which is essensially recycled newspaper, but it works very well and hides odors. I've used cedar too but it doesn't hide the smell as good as I thought it would.whats the best bedding for a rabbit?Q) i have a dwarf rabbit thats about a foot long and my brother built a cage that is 2 feet wide,4 feet long, and 4 feet high. he has a little house thats 2 feet high and long but my question is what is good bedding? right now i just have a blanket and i change it every 2 days and vacom up the poop. lol i have had him for over a year and just use a blanket but is that ok? every one keeps telling me dont use a blanket then what do i use? wood shaving, cotton bedding what? or shuold i leave it how it is? my rabbit it healthy and happy so what shuold i do??????
